What Is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision error in which distant objects appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. Myopia often begins in childhood, when the eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than on it. Because children’s eyes grow quickly, myopia can worsen as they age—especially if it starts early.

Beyond needing glasses, myopia can increase the risk of vision-threatening eye conditions later in life. Myopia control helps slow eye growth and reduce these risks.

Routine eye exams help protect your child’s vision and health as they grow. Schedule their next appointment with us today to get started!

Eye Health Risks Associated with Myopia

Any level of myopia can increase the risk of future eye health issues, and this risk grows significantly with higher prescriptions. Myopia stretches and weakens the internal structures of the eye, which can lead to conditions like:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Retinal detachment
  • Macular degeneration

These conditions can significantly impact vision, with some causing permanent damage if left untreated. Because myopia progresses rapidly in children, early intervention with myopia control is crucial to help reduce these risks.

Our Myopia Control Options

Myopia control uses various methods to slow progression, especially in children and adolescents whose eyes are still growing.

Our eye care team is committed to offering personalized, effective solutions based on your child’s needs. We tailor treatments to best support their vision and eye health.

Low-Dose Atropine

Atropine eye drops have been shown to effectively slow the progression of myopia in children and are safe for children as young as 4.

While atropine helps manage myopia, it doesn’t correct vision, so your child will still need glasses or contacts to see clearly. We’ll work with you to determine if atropine is the right choice for your child’s unique needs.

MiSight 1 Day lenses are FDA-approved, soft, daily disposable contact lenses designed to slow myopia progression in children. Safe for children as young as 8, these lenses work by focusing light in a way that signals the eye to stop growing.

Multifocal contact lenses correct your child’s nearsightedness while also slowing myopia progression.

These lenses contain a central portion that corrects distance vision and an outer portion that focuses peripheral light in front of the retina, signaling the eye to slow its growth.

For some children, combining treatments is more effective than using just one. A typical combination is atropine drops and soft multifocal contact lenses.

Our team will customize a treatment plan that combines the myopia control options that suit your child and their unique needs.
