How Often Do I Need an Eye Exam?

Even if you’re seeing perfect, we still recommend you have an eye exam once per year. Seeing perfect only tells us that your center vision is healthy, but many health concerns, including cardiovascular health, can be monitored through your eyes.

The American Optometric Association recommends that low-risk patients follow these guidelines at a minimum:

    • Adults ages 18 and up should have an eye exam yearly.

Patients with diabetes, dry eyes, glaucoma and many other health conditions may need to be seen more often if they are not under control.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

When you arrive, our friendly team will greet you. If you’re a new patient, we’ll ask about your health history, lifestyle, and current medications, along with any family history or concerns you may have.

A comprehensive eye exam is more than just a vision test. We use advanced technology to evaluate the front and back of your eyes, checking for potential risks like autoimmune or cardiovascular diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. We also assess your visual acuity and discuss your vision goals before recommending any corrective lenses.

We don’t use the air puff test—Dr. Korth agrees, it’s evil! Instead, we use Fluorescein (yellow drops) to check for dryness and allergies while taking pressure readings. We also test binocular balance and pupil response with every patient.

To keep your care up-to-date, we offer different history forms each year, so we gather fresh information each time. We’re here to make sure you leave feeling informed and confident in your eye health.

Even if you think you have perfect vision, it’s still essential to have regular eye exams. Eye diseases can begin with few to no symptoms, so a comprehensive exam remains the best way to assess any early signs of eye disease.
